WriteRoom App Reviews

The awesome original!

What can I say - with Lion-integration, WriteRoom becomes the weapon of choice to hammer out basically everything! I pre-write important Emails with this. I do all of my creative writing and concept outlining with this. Because once you start thinking about formatting, you stop thinking about structure and content. WriteRoom helps me write stuff the way it is perceived in the end. It literally cleaned up my act. :)

Sync between iPhone and Mac!

please make a sync possible between iPhone and the Mac

iCloud-Sync please!

Ansonsten ein wunderbares Programm. Besonders im Zusammenspiel mit iPhone udn iPad.

Basic in my workflow, WriteRoom to LaTeX

I am writing a lot, spend a lot of time (certainly too much) on things like writing articles and my PhD, and WriteRoom is part for years of my workflow. Because using LaTeX for the formatting stuff, I tested some just writing programs, with really distract-less surface (there are several), and this was the best for me, the most customizable with important features. Gut durchdacht. Great features: - unobtrusive session count, (time, words, pages, gives you a feeling of reward) - a Full screen single option: usefull if you have to deactivate Single spaces (I have to do it to unfold a huge mindmap on two screens) - Audio to input, means = I have typewriter sounds for keystroke, delete and return. For somebody grown up with that sound, it helps me to feel I am writing - I have configured inmediate save for writing, and the files are synced, so I am live-writing to the cloud = I do not loose 2 minutes of work if my computer collapses - Absolutely stable I was a SimpleText user, and over that program I got to this one. Congrats to the developer, and thank you.

Simple and solid

Ive been using WriteRoom for around two years, and I have never had any problems with it. It does what its supposed to do. Whether its worth $30 or not, I dont know. But Ive used software thats similar (OmmWriter, JDarkRoom, PyRoom on Linux) and havent liked the feel of them quite as much. Default colours are a bit geeky, but you can change them.

The tool for text.

If you are serious about working with text, you need a serious text editor. WriteRoom has what you need: your text, autosave and a word count. It has nothing you dont need: fancy formatting, helpful assistants, or row after row of tiny icons. When you need to type a lot of text and you dont need to worry about what it looks like, this is the tool for you. Ive owned it and used it for two years, and will gladly pay for it again to have it auto-install and update on every Mac in own in the future.

excellent program

its amazing how much more concentrated I am now with this full screen typer. its one of those thing you dont think you need until you install it. pure magic

Simple, elegant, flexible.

It looks fine, and it works cleanly. Theres enough customization to make it fit my needs. Worth the price, and the potential for continued support is inspiring. Sync services and the like may be a great feature for those who want it, but as it stands, its more than enough already. Ive shown this applications to friends and they were entirely and utterly underwhelmed. Suggests a level of understanding from the developer. Would reccommend to any writer with any project that halts when focus falters.

Was once better

WriteRoom used to be a very simple writing tool. Minimalistic with great UX, it was my favourite way to write. Recently they made an overhaul of this app, increasing more functions to give writers greater options. The problem is I didnt want more options—thats what Microsoft Word is for. The app has now become more difficult to use and the UX has declined. It may be a learning curve and Im still getting used to it; its been 10 days and Im still getting used to it. The previous iteration required no getting used to—that was the beauty of it. I miss the old version and the new updates—in my opinion—were a step in the wrong direction.

Nice writing experience

This app does exactly what it claims and I really enjoy the inverted white text against a dark background - it definitely makes for a soothing writing experience. However, its a little overpriced for what you get, which is exactly what is advertised: a pretty text editor. Pages is $20 and provides a hundred times more functionality and even has a similar, distraction-free full-screen mode. Its hard to justify charging $10 for Writeroom, but it is still a great app nevertheless.

Performance Bug in 3.0.1 in Fullscreen Mode with big text (using Writeroom theme)

[Rating for Version 3.0.1 …. 2 stars] Using WriteRoom hooked to a HDTV (46" TV) was nice with Version 2.5 using a bluetooth keyboard from sofa, but the version 3.0.1 kills the advantages: On a Macbook Air, the full screen performance is awful at big font size (72 point) which I use for typing from sofa seat distance. Version 2.5 performed approximately 50 times faster. Now it can only display text at less than 3-4 key presses per second, after theres about 2 screenfuls of text, and Im typing text at the very end. For some strange reason, inserting text in the middle is speedy. Or if Im running in windowed mode, or using the Textedit theme. NEW RATING: downgraded to 2 stars, until big-font-full-screen performance bug fixed. (Edit: I figured out how to change the background color) [Rating for Version 2.5: …. 4 stars] Hello! I was looking for the desktop version of a full-screen writing app, after having downloaded the iPhone version of Nebulous/WriteRoom (NOTE: Nebulous is much better than WriteRoom on the iPhone). Its perfect on the Macbook Air! For a desktop based full screen writing application, this is the best I have seen and I love the ability to resize the font. I do wish the iPhone version of WriteRoom was nearly as good (Ill re-rate to 5 stars once the new version of WriteRoom for iPhone/iPod comes out, if it addresses stability & configurability concerns -- it often crashes when you shake the iPod Touch, after creating a new document (flawed accelerometer shake routine) -- also better configurability. I need font size 36 and 50 on my iPhone, since I use a bluetooth keyboard and put the iPhone a little too far away) The bonus of the iPhone version is that I can synchronize however, and it would be nice to switch from iPhones Nebulous back to iPhones WriteRoom once its more stable/configurable. iPhone Nebulous fullscreen toggle (smart autohiding corner button) and font resize (pinch zoom) is much more pleasant than iPhone WriteRooms fullscreen toggle and font size resizer. Nontheless, the desktop version of WriteRoom has no flaws that affect me, and Im glad I have purchased it on my Mac!

For those who miss the simplicity of a typewriter

For many, the problem with writing today is how easily we get distracted. Often by something that is on the screen. WriteRoom is a cure for that -- it makes the writing interface unobtrusive, simple, and easy on the eyes. Piszesz po polsku, angielsku czy japońsku, spisuje się rewelacyjnie -- wreszcie nic nie przeszkadza, nie kłuje w oczy. Po prostu piszesz.

Leaves much to be desired.

The idea of clean screen is good. The fact that, when picking files from the Word, it changes their format, is acceptable. But erasing all footnotes is absolutely unacceptable!

Microsoft Office??

I bought this app to help me with my school papers because i have a focusing problem but apparently this app is not compatible with Ms Office 2011. If they will update it to be compatible i will change my rating, otherwise this is completly useless to me.

Wonderful

[UPDATE] QuickCursor now supports WriteRooms new bundle ID, so the one downside mentioned below has been addressed. Way to go! Ive been a long-time user of WriteRoom and just transfered to the App Store version. IMHO, the screenshots really dont do justice to this application (tiny, ugly, green fonts, yeah its nerdy, Ill give it that much :-) Font size/color/type is completly configurable. Space between left/right margins, completely configurable. Space top/bottom margins, completely configurable. Scale the size larger/smaller when in full-screen. So if the screenshots are giving you pause, dont let them. Jump on this while its on sale. The only downside right now is that QuickCursor doesnt recognize WriteRoom due to the new bundle ID, but Jesse is aware of this and published a workaround to his blog. An update to QuickCursor with a fix should be pending soon. Cant wait for TaskPaper to move over to the App Store and for the iPhone version to go Universal (iPad) and gain Dropbox capability. Kudos to the author for the sale!

Simple but perfect

I have no complaints about this application. Its a testament to simplicity and serves me on a daily basis.

Crash prone

There is much I like about this app, and its potential, but it crashes on me with alarming regularity. For a program designed to assist the flow and process of writing, crashing is a fatal flaw. I hope to see this corrected immediately, but until it is, I cannot and will not continue to use the app.

Great app but hefty price

I would rate this app 5 stars if it werent for its 24.99$ price tag. The ideal price for the quality of this could be something like 18.99$ or something, its a really convienient app with a great retro look, you can also change the background color, text color and ont to your liking. Great app, thanks hogbay!!!!!

It

This is my favorite word processor to use. Though it does have one limitation to me at the moment which is, it lacks Lions Versions compatibillity. I think it should be included in the next WriteRoom update.

Writeroom

Much more streamlined them the previous versions. This new verision has substantialy less selections then the previous versions, making it easier to configure. No longer do you have to have a page outline to show an active page count. The new Themes system makes it much easier to switch layouts on the fly. I really like the ability to record sessions. It also has a timer next to a session word count to keep you up to date on your time and word count for the session. (For you NANOWRIMO enthusiasts.) So far im impressed with the changes.
